Leading a phenomenal cast including Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins, Tom Cruise soars as Maverick, the young, in-your-face U.S. fighter pilot with a need for speed, a lot to prove, and even more to learn. Forever ranking with the best action films of all time, Top Gun remains a high-octane adrenaline rush.

Great re-release movie at great price!
This is the restored, remastered,..... of the 1986 movie so the color is not vibrant as the modern movies but they did really good converting it to 3D and re-released it on IMAX in 2013. The 3D effect was good and of course, this movie is well known for the soundtrack, the price is cheap so it's totally worth it to add to your collection!

A Classic ’80s Action Movie
Tony Scott’s 1986 film, “Top Gun,” is a fun action movie that follows F-14A Tomcat pilots at the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (later re-named Fighter Tactics Instructor program) at Miramar, CA, dubbed TOPGUN. Scott based the film on a screenplay by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., who adapted an article Ehud Yonay wrote for California Magazine in 1983 titled “Top Guns.” The film follows in the tradition of Tom Wolfe’s book and Philip Kaufman’s movie, “The Right Stuff,” though without as much meditation on the nature of the “right stuff” and its downsides. The film stars Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Kelly McGillis as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Val Kilmer as Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Anthony Edwards as Lt. JG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Tom Skerritt as CDR Mike “Viper Metcalf, Michael Ironside as Lt. CDR Rick “Jester” Heatherly, Tim Robbins as Lt. JG Sam “Merlin” Wells, Clarence Gilyard as Lt. JG Marcus “Sundown” Williams, and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw. The overall plot of “Top Gun” blends elements of 1980s action films with the plot structure of a sports movie, including use of montages and a rivalry between Maverick and Iceman. Interestingly, there is no trophy at TOPGUN as it’s a training school, but that wouldn’t make for as engaging a film without some form of conflict. Also, several of the actions throughout the film would have turned the Cold War hot had they happened in real life. Otherwise, the aerial footage is brilliant, using actual Navy planes in carefully choreographed flights. Paired with Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone” and Harold Faltermeyer’s soundtrack, the result is a high-octane spectacle. The film’s legacy included the television series “JAG” (and, by extension, the “NCIS” spinoffs). In fact, early in the production of “JAG,” the television studio re-used much of the stock footage from “Top Gun” as it was still some of the best footage over a decade later. Even elements of Maverick’s backstory influenced that of Harmon Rabb in “JAG.” Further, a “Top Gun” sequel is due later this year, so this is a great way to add the original to your home movie collection.

Just a little more wow please
This is for the 30th Anniversary steelbook edition, not the movie content. I saw Top Gun in the theater when it was originally releases and own a VHS copy of it. This is a movie that begs to be seen in the best possible resolution and highest quality sound, so when I got the bug to see it again, this time on my new larger and better TV and newly enhanced sound system with three room rattling subwoofers, this blu-ray DVD version is the one I chose to buy. Was it worth it, or did the quality of my home theater system outdo the quality of this release?I wish I could say this is the ultimate version of Top Gun but it’s not. Visually it’s impressive but the reality is this movie was filmed over 30 years ago and while the DVD is worlds improved over my VHS copy, it would take a far more intensive digital remastering to equal the quality of several other digitally remastered classics I can think of.But let’s face it, what always made Top Gun a heart stopper in the theaters was the sound and here I would say this is the best release yet and I’m not sure what more they could do to improve it, after all they only had a Dolby two-channel track to begin with and this movie screams for multiple rear, center and the full 24.1.10 channel Dolby Atmos home theater experience (note that I don’t have that and I don’t know anybody who does, just sayin’). The DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 offers plausible surround effects and clear intelligible dialogue but falls short a little in really being able to rattle the windows. So the bottom line is that for the twelve bucks I paid for this disc I’m happy and I like it. I wish they could have done more to wow me but reality is a real thing.
